Emergency Contraception / Morning After Pill
Emergency Contraception (EC) is commonly known as “Plan B,” “Next Choice,” “ella,” or “Morning After Pill”.
About Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception is NOT the same as abortion.
Instead, EC prevents conception of a pregnancy. Since sperm can remain active in the body for up to 5 days, EC reduces the risk of pregnancy. It works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries). If ovulation has already begun and pregnancy occurred, EC will not work. In this case, you will remain pregnant.
Women and men of any age can purchase most EC brands (Plan-B, Next Choice and generics) over the counter, at a local pharmacy or at Summit Medical Centers without a prescription or an ID.
Plan ahead and get morning after pill to keep on hand!
Patients can take EC up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected intercourse!
