Abortion Services
General Information
Summit Women's Center offers abortion services
by appointment up to 17 weeks from the last menstrual period (LMP).
Abortions are performed under local anesthesia (1st trimester only) or twilight (1st trimester or 2nd trimester) by state licensed, Board Certified or
eligible OB-GYN physicians. Female physician available.
Medical Abortion (Early Abortion/Abortion Pill)
4 - 9 weeks
The Abortion Pill for Early Abortion. Non-surgical abortion (abortion by pill) is available up to 9 weeks (63
days) gestation. Two
medications are used -- Mifeprex (RU486) and Misoprostol. Counseling is
a very important part of the medical abortion process. Medical abortion
allows the patient to complete the abortion in the privacy and comfort
of her home.
Surgical Abortion
Up to 12 Weeks LMP (first trimester)
Abortions can be done under local anesthesia
(a numbing of the cervix) or twilight (a strong sedative). The average
stay in the clinic is approximately 2 to 3 hours.
Between 12+ to 17 weeks LMP (second trimester) Abortions can be done under twilight anesthesia.
The average stay in the clinic is 2 to 3 hours.
All abortions are performed by state licensed
Board Certified or eligible OB-GYN physicians. Services made available
through our clinic include laboratory work, counseling, exam by the doctor,
recovery room care, and follow-up exams. The follow-up exams given at
2 to 3 weeks following the procedure are free. Follow-up exams given 4
weeks or later will incur a $15 fee.
Payment can be made with cash, money order, or credit cards. No personal checks. Summit accepts Medicaid (Title 19) and some
City welfare. Summit also participates in most commercial insurance and
HMOs. Women participating in these plans must have prior approval. Some
insurance companies do not cover additional charges for twilight or general
anesthesia.

Connecticut insurance plans: Title 19 (Medicaid) and all Medicaid State
HMO Plans; City or Town Medical Assistance; Healthy Start; Healthnet
(PHS); ConnectiCare; Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United HealthCare and Oxford.
